The International Family Guide to US University Admissions

[Book Review]

Many people have asked if we are keen to send AJ overseas for further studies.  We are, of course, if there are any opportunities. It is an exposure not everyone will have, and it will certainly enrich one's life. But, whether it is university in Australia, UK or USA, we are unsure. What is sure is: The process of the application to foreign universities is daunting, more often than not, complicated. Unless you have friends living in that country or connection with the universities of choice, one would definitely be swarm with the many unknowns. But, you don't know what you don't know, until you know what you don't.

So, research and talk to people who know are important. But, what to research on, and who are the people who know whom we can talk to?

Fortunately I got to know of this book.

The International Family Guide to US University Admissions is an indispensable comprehensive guide written by an experienced international educator and counsellor, Jennifer Ann Aquino. It is a tried-and-true handbook that provides expert insight to make the complicated and confusing US university admission less daunting.

There are over 3,000 universities in US available for selection, and really, it is not about the Ivy Leagues, it is about the fit. When the student fits well into the school culture and such, his/her education journey is most enjoyable. This guide book lists out the step-by-step milestone one needs to hit. Having following through that diligently, it will become more transparent which schools are of the better fit for the student.

The book also provides case studies and words of advice from Jennifer's former students and their families, making the entire guide book holistic. I especially appreciate the part on understanding the differences between the SAT and ACT exams because I was as confused as many others.

So whether you're an international student living outside of the US or an ex-pat living abroad, you'll find answers to all of your questions – all in one place.

The International Family Guide to US University Admissions is available at Amazon, Wiley and Book Depository. Do get hold of a copy if you are considering sending your child to US for further studies. You may read the complimentary chapter here too.
